New Zealand receives priority processing.

Temporarily closed to new applications is the New Zealand stream of the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa. As a result, no new applications will be accepted from 10 December 2022 to 1 July 2023.

This is a brief suspension of new applications as the government examines potential avenues for New Zealanders to immigrate to and obtain citizenship in Australia, reflecting the close relations between our two countries.

The Department of Home Affairs has created a specific team to give processing of this caseload priority and will attempt to complete the majority of the on-hand New Zealand stream applications during this time.

Due to the small number of spots recently allotted to this group, the majority of New Zealand stream candidates have been waiting several years for the completion of their visa applications.

The following streamlining measures are adopted to recognize that this group of New Zealanders has lived in Australia for a long time, has been employed there, and has helped the country's economy recover during the COVID-19 epidemic. Among them is the elimination of the prerequisites that applicants for the New Zealand stream on hand must meet in relation to:

  1. the time spent living in Australia;
  2. the required income;
  3. and the individual's health, considering that Medicare is available to New Zealanders who have already migrated to Australia.

The issuance of New Zealand stream visas during the 2022–23 Program Year will enable visa holders to take advantage of the advantages of permanent residence more quickly, particularly the automatic acquisition of Australian citizenship at birth for their children born in Australia and immediate access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
